COMS Communication Styles

COMS Communication Styles

COMS Communication Styles draws inspiration from Paul Costa and Robert McCrae’s research on the Big Five Personality Model, introducing how different personality styles prefer to communicate along the spectrums of result-driven vs. interpersonal and reflective vs. assertive.

COMS is an interactive communication styles exploration. Through answering 8 strategically designed questions, you and your team will gain valuable insights into how individuals tend to communicate and interact. By visualising this into a simple but effective grid and delivering an interactive workshop, it can be instrumental in improving team dynamics, reducing conflict, and fostering more effective communication across the organization. Each of the four identified style has its strengths in different contexts. Your team will leave the session knowing with a deeper understanding and appreciation for diverse communication styles as well as how to leverage each approach and adapt their style to maximize impact and drive positive outcomes.

Strategic Planning

This isn’t just another corporate exercise – it’s a chance for you to engage your team in the planning and execution of the organization and an opportunity to align on strategic planning initiatives and actions.

As strategic planning facilitators, we guide organizations through the strategic planning process. We don’t dictate solutions to you, we enable your groups to co-create strategies based knowledge, experience and diversity. We create an environment conducive to open dialogue, innovation, critical thinking, and collaborative decision-making. This role is distinct in that it focuses on empowering your organization rather than imposing external ideas. Our award-winning facilitators are catalysts for transformative decision-making and planning. We do, however, offer guidance and insight into how other organizations operate and offer suggestions you may wish to implement. To us, strategic planning is more than just a single planning session. We work with our clients to help them navigate the strategic plan throughout the months and even years ahead. With our objective lens, we are well-positioned to offer insights into the strategic plan and execution tactics.

Building Your Leadership Style FAQs

What does it mean to develop a leadership style?

Developing a leadership style involves understanding how you naturally lead, how others experience you, and how to adapt based on context. It’s about recognizing your communication habits, decision-making patterns, and values in action. Rather than following a fixed model, it’s a process of increasing consistency and alignment. Leadership style development includes reflection, feedback, and trying out new behaviors. Over time, this creates greater clarity in how you lead. It also helps you respond more effectively when faced with pressure or uncertainty.

Why is having a defined leadership style important?

A clearly developed style helps people know what to expect from you. It minimizes confusion during stress or change and builds trust within teams. When your approach is grounded in intention, your communication becomes more consistent. This improves alignment and speeds up decision-making. It also reduces internal conflict around how to lead in different situations. Having a defined leadership style allows others to work with you more confidently.

Can leadership style change over time?

Yes, leadership style can evolve as your responsibilities shift or your self-awareness grows. Many leaders begin with habits shaped by early experiences and gradually refine their approach. Feedback, coaching, and new environments often influence these shifts. Over time, your style may expand to include a broader set of tools and responses. While core values often stay constant, your outward leadership behaviors can change significantly. Our facilitators support this process by helping you evaluate what’s working and what needs attention.

What are common leadership style categories?

Some widely used categories include coaching, democratic, visionary, directive, affiliative, and pacesetting. Each reflects a different emphasis, such as collaboration, performance, or emotional connection. These categories offer a helpful lens but don’t capture the full range of how people lead. Most leaders use elements from several styles depending on what’s needed. The goal is flexibility, not rigid adherence to one method. Understanding your default style helps you know when to shift gears.

How can I discover my leadership style?

Your leadership style becomes clearer when you explore how you tend to act under pressure, give feedback, and respond to team dynamics. Assessments, peer input, and guided reflection all offer useful insight. Many people also find that certain environments highlight their strengths or gaps. Working with a facilitator from Positive Impact Professional Development can help surface patterns you may not notice on your own. Combining these tools gives you a practical foundation for growth.

Does my leadership style affect team performance?

Your leadership style influences how your team handles conflict, maintains focus, and navigates stress. If your approach is inconsistent or unclear, it often results in second-guessing and lowered morale. A grounded, intentional style helps people feel safe and focused. Teams often reflect the tone and energy of their leaders, especially under pressure. Leadership style shapes expectations and culture across your group. When aligned with your values, it becomes a stabilizing force.

Is one leadership style better than others?

No one style outperforms all others across every situation. Certain approaches work best in specific conditions—directive in emergencies, coaching during development, and affiliative during recovery periods. Strong leaders develop range and adjust as needed. What matters is knowing what your team needs most at a given time. Self-awareness allows you to choose rather than react.

How can facilitation help me shape my leadership style?

Facilitation creates structured space to reflect, experiment, and grow your leadership capacity. At Positive Impact Professional Development, we guide conversations that help uncover what drives your behavior and how it’s perceived. This process surfaces both strengths and blind spots. You’ll have the chance to explore new ways of leading while staying connected to your values. It’s about increasing range without losing authenticity. Facilitated development ensures your leadership style evolves with clarity.
