COMS Communication Styles

COMS Communication Styles

COMS Communication Styles draws inspiration from Paul Costa and Robert McCrae’s research on the Big Five Personality Model, introducing how different personality styles prefer to communicate along the spectrums of result-driven vs. interpersonal and reflective vs. assertive.

COMS is an interactive communication styles exploration. Through answering 8 strategically designed questions, you and your team will gain valuable insights into how individuals tend to communicate and interact. By visualising this into a simple but effective grid and delivering an interactive workshop, it can be instrumental in improving team dynamics, reducing conflict, and fostering more effective communication across the organization. Each of the four identified style has its strengths in different contexts. Your team will leave the session knowing with a deeper understanding and appreciation for diverse communication styles as well as how to leverage each approach and adapt their style to maximize impact and drive positive outcomes.

Strategic Planning

This isn’t just another corporate exercise – it’s a chance for you to engage your team in the planning and execution of the organization and an opportunity to align on strategic planning initiatives and actions.

As strategic planning facilitators, we guide organizations through the strategic planning process. We don’t dictate solutions to you, we enable your groups to co-create strategies based knowledge, experience and diversity. We create an environment conducive to open dialogue, innovation, critical thinking, and collaborative decision-making. This role is distinct in that it focuses on empowering your organization rather than imposing external ideas. Our award-winning facilitators are catalysts for transformative decision-making and planning. We do, however, offer guidance and insight into how other organizations operate and offer suggestions you may wish to implement. To us, strategic planning is more than just a single planning session. We work with our clients to help them navigate the strategic plan throughout the months and even years ahead. With our objective lens, we are well-positioned to offer insights into the strategic plan and execution tactics.

FAQs for Ottawa, ON Facilitation

What types of facilitation sessions are most common in Ottawa?

We often support strategic planning, executive retreats, team development, and stakeholder engagement sessions. Ottawa’s mix of government, nonprofit, and private sector organizations means facilitation must adapt to different goals and cultures. These sessions help groups align, prioritize, and make decisions together. Each is designed to fit your organizational context.

How do you tailor facilitation to meet diverse organizational needs?

We start with discovery conversations to understand your structure, objectives, and constraints. Then, we co-design a format that matches your goals and group dynamics. Our approach flexes depending on whether you’re dealing with leadership alignment, culture work, or external partnerships. Facilitation only works when it’s shaped around your reality.

Can facilitation help our team break through decision fatigue?

Yes, facilitation is particularly useful when your team is stuck in recurring discussions without resolution. We structure sessions to clarify options, set boundaries, and focus on next steps. In Ottawa, this is often useful for cross-functional teams or policy development groups. It restores clarity and momentum.

Is bilingual facilitation available in the National Capital Region?

Yes, we offer facilitation in both English and French. Many sessions in Ottawa include bilingual participants, so we prepare materials and activities with that in mind. We also adapt pace and participation formats to support understanding. Inclusion is core to effective facilitation.

How long does a facilitation engagement usually last?

Most engagements range from one half-day to a full multi-day retreat. Some clients also retain us to facilitate recurring sessions over time. We’ll recommend a cadence that fits your goals. All timelines are flexible based on your availability and scope.

What if our group includes remote participants?

We are experienced in hybrid and virtual facilitation formats. Whether participants are joining from home or across departments, we make sure they are included. We use online collaboration tools that allow for active participation. Ottawa-based teams often include both in-person and virtual attendees.

What do we receive after the facilitation is complete?

You’ll receive a summary of the insights, decisions, and next steps that emerged from the session. We can also include artifacts like group visuals, documented commitments, and follow-up materials. This ensures continuity between the session and the work ahead. Our goal is to leave you with momentum, not just meeting notes.

What makes your facilitation style effective in Ottawa?

We understand the balance between structure and dialogue that Ottawa-based teams require. Whether working with federal departments, grassroots nonprofits, or boards, we adapt our methods to the context. We prioritize neutrality, active listening, and visual synthesis. That helps your group focus on substance rather than process.
